Online teaching is one of the savvy ways to make money from home. If you are passionate about kids, have a fun personality, and can teach English, you would make an incredible online teacher. What’s so great about this gig is that there are lots of companies looking to hire native English speakers to teach English to Chinese students. And one of the most popular teaching platforms right now, QKids, offers such opportunity.
I’ve put together this QKids review to give you insights on Qkids, what it’s like to work for QKids whether this is the right hustle for you. If you are asking “Is Qkids legit?”, then this Qkids Review is for you.
What Is Qkids?

QKids is an online teaching platform that connects over 800,000+ Chinese kids with qualified English teachers in North America. Established in 2015, QKids quickly rose up in ranks as one of the most renowned English learning companies in the world today. QKids has established offices in Beijing, Xiamen, Guangzhou, and Shenzhen.
How Does QKids work?
One of the things that quickly caught my interest about QKids is how English lessons are taught. QKids clients are young kids between ages 4 to 12. Since you can’t expect kids this age to have the attention span of adults, QKids devised an interactive learning curriculum which makes learning English more fun and entertaining.
Every lesson is taught over the QKids proprietary platform. Teachers use interactive features in the app, such as games, animation, and storytelling to teach kids English. What makes QKids even more interesting is that teachers need not create a lesson plan. Every lesson is built in the QKids app and accessible when you’re ready to teach the class.
How To Teach at Qkids
So, in this part of my QKids review, I will go into the details of how to get into QKids so you can start earning money as an online English teacher.
Requirements:
To apply at QKids, you must make sure that you meet the following conditions:
- Eligible to work in Canada and/or the US
- Bachelor’s degree
- Teaching license or certificate
- Excellent English communication skills
- Comfortable working children
- Fun and cheerful personality
As for the technical requirements, you must have a reliable computer with a webcam, headset with a microphone, and preferably a cable internet connection with at least 2Mbps upload speed and 4Mbps download speed.
Application Process:
1. Sign up and send demo video
The application process is pretty standard among English teaching companies. To get started, simply sign up here. You will have to create a new account and input your personal information. After this, send them your resume and short demo video wherein you talk about yourself and teaching background. You can send them the URL of your video or send it as an attachment.
2. Demo interviews
You will then be invited for two demo interviews. In the first interview, you have to demonstrate your knowledge of the teaching platform (how the buttons work, how to improve audio and video quality, etc.). The second demo is a 25-minute Q&A interview with the recruiter. After this, you will be asked to demonstrate your teaching style and personality.
3. Trial classes
Moving on, you will teach 2-5 trial classes. These classes are paid. You will also receive feedback on how to improve your teaching style so that it’s more fun and engaging for the students.
4. Background check
QKids will run a background check to make sure that all the information and paperwork you’ve submitted checks out.
5. Contract signing
Finally, you will receive and sign your contract. You can now start teaching at QKids.
What Does Working At QKids Look Like?
I find that QKids actually has a very systematic way of running their online classes. Here’s what working for QKids looks like.
Class size and duration
You will work with 1-4 Chinese students in each class. The classes last for 30 minutes. You need to work at 6-19 hours each week to keep your teaching post.
Class schedule
You can set your class schedule a week ahead. Visit the teacher software every Sunday night to ascertain your schedule for the following week.
Class time slots
Since you will be following Beijing time, you will be teaching classes early in the morning or during the evenings. For instance, if you live in EST regions, classes typically fall at 6-9 AM every day, plus weekday schedules of 8 PM to 12 Midnight.
Class cancelation
You can cancel scheduled classes at least 24 hours before. Make sure to inform QKids about it, though.
Contract
Contract with QKids is good for six months. You may keep working for QKids after the company’s re-evaluation.
Lessons
Lessons are already prepared for the teachers and are easily accessible within the app. You can use all the features, games, slides, stories, etc. to make learning more fun and engaging for your students.
How Much Does QKids Pay?
For any job opportunity, the golden question is usually how much money you can make from it. So, how much does QKids pay?
As per its website, QKids pays $8 per class (each class lasts 30 minutes), which boils down to $16 per hour. I think this rate isn’t too bad, considering that QKids also give bonuses for attendance and performance. It’s possible to make $20 an hour teaching at QKids.
Payments are processed once a month (12th of the month) and are made directly into your bank account. If you’re from Canada, your rate is still computed in US dollars.
Pros and Cons of Teaching at QKids
QKids provide an excellent way to cash in on your teaching skills, but it’s not entirely perfect. As with all jobs, teaching at QKids comes with its own set of advantages and disadvantages.
Pros
- Lessons are already provided – traditional teachers and even some online tutors still need to make lesson plans for each class. It’s not the case with QKids. With lessons already provided for and accessible in the app, all you have to do is familiarize yourself with the learning materials before you show up in class.
- Flexible schedule – you can pick your own schedules per week. Since you can be flexible, you could even take another job that doesn’t overlap with your QKids schedule.
- No need to find students – QKids does the recruitment for you. As long as you give your best performance as a teacher, you will always have students to work with.
Cons
- Work in China time – classes follow the typical schedule in China, which usually fall early mornings and late nights in North America. If you’re not comfortable waking up early or have night time commitments, this job is not for you.
- Independent contractor – keep in mind that you’re not a regular QKids employee so you have to take care of your own taxes and insurance policies.
- No class during vacations – students typically take month long vacations during the Chinese New Year, which means you won’t have work during this time.
- Work up to 19 hours/ week – this gig is more like a second-hustle or part-time job because you can only work a maximum of 19 hours per week. Don’t think of it as a full-time job.
Is QKids Legit?
QKids reviews would not be complete without a legit check.
With so many remote jobs on the internet, many of which turn out to be scams, I think it’s only right to ask: is QKids legit?
As per my research, I could say with most certainty that QKids is indeed legit and not a scam. It is a real company that hires online English teachers from the US and Canada. QKids doesn’t just anybody, it has a strict set of guidelines that applicants must meet to ensure that students receive quality education.
I have also not encountered reviews about QKids being fake or scam, or that it failed to pay its teachers. In fact, QKids has a 4.1 rating on Glassdoor which means it has quite a solid reputation in the online teaching industry.
QKids Teaching Reviews
To help you gauge what it’s like to teach at Qkids, I’ve gathered a couple of Qkids employee reviews from around the internet.
According to Ebony Glass, she’s been working for QKids for 2 years now. She said she enjoys the interactive teaching platform and the ability to teach higher-level lessons which are less repetitive. Another plus point that she receives payment on time. However, she does point out that working in the Beijing timezone can require some adjustment.
A user on Reddit posted on the thread WorkOnline, she said that she enjoys the flexibility, except when she needs to work the early shift. She also adds that schedules can be inconsistent at times, so it’s not right to rely heavily on QKids for a full-time income.
QKids Review: Is QKids Worth It?
Now that we’ve come at the end of my QKids review, I’d like to say that this is a pretty decent way to earn part-time income. Overall, QKids is a legit company and pays consistently. However, according to most reviews for QKids, schedule is the biggest struggle. Since you will be teaching based on China time, you will have to take early morning or late-night shifts. I think it is only flexible to some extent, but not entirely.
