What is GoTranscript?

GoTranscript was born out of frustration with the fact that high-quality transcription services were hard to come by. Meanwhile, most transcribers had trouble keeping up with quality standards when their workload start to mount.

GoTranscript was established in the UK in 2005, and is aimed to develop a system that maintains quality while being able to handle huge volumes of work. Over the years, GoTranscript managed to establish a solid reputation in the transcription industry, working with thousands of clients along the way. GoTranscript also offers a slew of other services apart from transcription, including captioning, translation, and subtitling.

How to Work at GoTranscript?

GoTranscript continuously hires new transcribers. However, not all who apply will make the cut. If you wish to work for GoTranscript, here are the qualifications you must meet and the application process you need to go through.

Basically, that’s all that you need to apply for GoTranscript. You don’t even need previous experience or a degree in a related field. However, I suggest taking transcription training, such as Transcribe Anywhere, to get more comprehensive knowledge of the transcription process. Being effective and productive in your job as a transcriber means you can take in more work and earn more money.

Application Process

GoTranscript has a very application process. Simply head to their website and pass their test. In this GoTranscript test, you will transcribe a video following their transcription guidelines. The GoTranscript guidelines contain information on how a text should be transcribed (full verbatim or clean verbatim); timestamping types and all the rules that you have to follow.

If you pass the test, you can sign up on GoTranscript using the same email you used when you took the test. The agency will send you more information on how to start working. If you failed the test, you may re-take it after a couple of days. Try to work your transcribing skills more so you can pass the next test.

How Does Working With GoTranscript Look Like?

Let’s say you’ve passed the test and you’re ready to take your first paid job. All you have to do is head over to your dashboard and look at the available files to transcribe. You don’t have to pick a file right away. You can listen to a short clip from that entire file to gauge the clarity of the audio.

Once you’ve picked a file, you can either work on it online or offline. You have around six hours to work on a 10-minute audio file, which is quite generous especially if you’re a newbie. Of course, it helps to be a fast typist so you can take on as much work as you can manage.

All transcribed files are reviewed and rated by an editor, so you want to keep in mind that both quality and timeliness are essential to your job.

I appreciate the fact that GoTranscript is very transparent about their pay rates for their transcribers. According to its website, you can earn as much as $0.60/audio or video minute. On average, transcribers can make around $150/month, while their top hustlers earn around $1,200/month.

Your GoTranscript payment is transferred to your Payoneer or PayPal account every Friday, without fail.

GoTranscript: The Pros and Cons

 At this point, you’re probably weighing whether or not to give GoTranscript a shot. So, I’m going to give you a run-down of the pros and cons of working at GoTranscript so you can make the right decision.

Pros:

• Pays reliably each week.
• You can work at your own time.
• Preview the files before working on them.
• Beginners are welcome to apply.
• Accepts applicants worldwide.

Cons:

• Poor audio quality or speakers with non-English accents can make transcribing more challenging.

• You have to maintain at least a 3.5 rating to keep your job.

Is GoTranscript Real or Fake?

For work-from-home opportunities such as this one, it’s quite common for people to ask: is GoTranscript legit? And I think it’s good to be thinking along these lines as well. You need to be cautious of every online opportunity you come across and make sure you don’t engage in scams or fraudulent jobs.

Now, GoTranscript has been around for the past 15 years and it has worked with some of the biggest brands in the industry such as Netflix, Stanford University, Huffington Post, Samsung, The New York Times, and more. Dan of Dan Travels quit his corporate job and joined GoTranscript in early 2019. Dan said he earned his first dollars from his GoTranscript jobs and said that this gig allowed him to “work from anywhere around the world. All you need is a good internet connection, a working laptop, and some patience.”

I also looked at forums on GoTranscript review Reddit threads and found complaints on low pay, poor audio quality, and glitches on the online editor from time to time.

As I wrap up this GoTranscript review, I conclude that GoTranscript is a real company that offers genuine transcription opportunities. It offers a low barrier to entry and flexible working hours that’s ideal for most stay-at-home parents. However, GoTranscript is not perfect. You will deal with poor audio quality at some point and get rated by editors for your work, and some people just don’t do well with these.

So if you’re looking for transcription jobs, in particular, GoTranscript is one company you might want to try, although I suggest keeping realistic expectations when it comes to pay rate and workload. However, if you’re open to other options, there are tons of other opportunities out there that you might want to consider.
